After a riveting end to the ODI series, which New Zealand won 2-1, the focus turns to the Twenty20s, which Pakistan will feel they are better placed to trump. Pakistan conceded the ODI series in typically erratic fashion, making a meal of a chase of 212 before a phenomenal fightback staged by Mohammad Aamer and Saeed Ajmal ensured the game was settled in the final over. Tempting as it is to look at this series as a mighty battle for the fourth place in the ICC ODI rankings, or even a series where Pakistan seek cold-blooded revenge for the ignominy heaped upon them by the very same opponents at the Champions Trophy, it is, fortunately, neither. This is simply a compelling series between two eminently watchable sides who usually tend to produce some high-quality cricket against each other; no Pakistan-New Zealand contest, for example, is complete without one spectacular batting collapse.
When this seven-match ODI series is finished, it’s likely that what lingers in the memory the longest is not MS Dhoni’s century in Nagpur, or the consistency of Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting, but how the teams lost key players to injury after every contest and had to make do with thinning resources and last-minute reinforcements. Not one of the first three fixtures was contested by two full-strength elevens and both India and Australia are further depleted ahead of the fourth game at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.
