And now, with respect to an Australian side that may be the reigning Champions Trophy champions but are still in an undeniable rebuilding phase, England prepare to face a team that really knows how to play one-day cricket. In the absence of Kevin Pietersen (who has scored two of England’s three ODI hundreds since January 2008 – a tally that even Scotland has surpassed) and latterly Andrew Flintoff and even Luke Wright, England lack batsmen who can break the shackles, and raise the tempo. Strauss has been batting like a dream all summer, but even at his most imperious, he is still a man for whom an 80.00 strike-rate is a pacey tempo – hence his unfortunate habit during the Australia ODIs of getting out when well set, usually while attempting a reverse-sweep or similar, shots that his colleagues ought to have been producing while he continued to anchor the innings.

Strange results are possible in 50-over cricket – let’s not forget, when England were last humiliated by Australia in a one-day campaign, in Australia in 2006-07, they somehow emerged with the CB Series trophy in their luggage, after Paul Collingwood stitched together back-to-back victories in the finals. But they’ve never yet won an ICC global event, and they’ve rarely looked less ready to break that habit. The rarefied atmosphere of the Highveld is no place for weary cricketers.

Australia, inevitably, start favourites, because they have the incentive of a slice of history to drive them on – no team has ever been whitewashed 7-0, although England themselves came close before their ODI tour to India was curtailed last year. With Ricky Ponting slotting back into the captaincy fresh from a well-earned week’s break, there’s no question that Australia’s desire will be maintained. England, on the other hand, have taken the opposite route. Paul Collingwood and James Anderson have been rested, a fairly sure sign that the series has already been surrendered.

There is a real determination in the Australian side to treat this one-day series as a new chapter after the Ashes disappointment. The ICC’s technical committee approved the inclusion of Paine, who was named in the 30-man preliminary squad and has already replaced Haddin for the limited-overs series in England.

The committee also approved the replacement of Daren Powell with Kevin McClean, the 21-year old Combined Colleges and Campuses’ allrounder, in the West Indies squad. Powell had been named in the 30-man preliminary squad despite reportedly turning down the chance to be part of the West Indies side after Chris Gayle and Co. decided to strike.

Trefor James, the Cricket Australia doctor, said Haddin’s surgery was successful despite his unavailability for the Champions Trophy. “After discussion with Brad’s surgeon and the Cricket Australia medical staff, it is clear Brad will not have recovered sufficiently for him to be considered for any part of the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa,” James said. “While the surgery was a success and there have been no complications, the timeframe for recovery is not sufficient and therefore he can not be considered for selection.”

The operation on the ring finger of Haddin’s left hand, which he broke shortly after the toss at the Edgbaston Test, could yet rule Haddin out of the one-day series in India starting in late October. While Haddin is aiming to return for that tour, Australia will not risk him if there is any doubt over his fitness with a six-Test home summer approaching.

“I am aiming to be available for selection for the one-day series in India however this is a decision that will be made in consultation with the Cricket Australia medical staff when the time arises,” Haddin said. “In the past I have been able to recover from finger injuries and surgery very quickly and I am hopeful this will again be the case.”

His place atop the England order for Friday’s opening one-day international against Australia is now in doubt, although it is uncertain whether England have called in a replacement. An England spokesman confirmed that the injury was currently being looked at the ECB medical staff, but said that there were no further details available at this stage.

The injury was sustained as Denly toppled forwards following a collision with Owais Shah. His left leg caught in the turf as he lost balance, and after rolling on impact he took several moments before attempting to flex his knee. Though he was initially able to leave the field unaided, he had to be helped up the steep flight of steps to the dressing rooms.

Denly scored a half-century on his ODI debut against Ireland last Thursday.

Denly’s injury is not the first time an England player has been struck down while playing football in the warm-ups. Matt Prior suffered back spasms during such a game on the morning of the Headingley Test, and played with the assistance of pain-killing injections.

Both sides dispatched their Associate opponents in recent days – Australia beating Scotland and England just about avoiding a howler against Ireland – but neither team has yet to master the shortest of formats. Australia failed to reach the group stages of the World Twenty20 while England were beaten to the semi-finals post by West Indies. Also, Australia have lost their last five matches in a row; their last win came in February.

Yet both teams have key one-day players of whom much is expected. For England, a lot was desired of Ravi Bopara in the World Twenty20; he gave encouraging performances of 46, 5, 2, 37 and 55. Now, though, he finds himself in a horrible rut which forced the selectors to opt for the debutant Jonathan Trott in the final Ashes Test, and though he bounced back with a double-hundred for Essex while England’s Ashes heroes were drowning in champagne, he fell for a duck in Belfast.

Meanwhile Australia will have to do without Ricky Ponting, who flew home with the Test specialists, and he’s not expected to be back until the latter stages of the subsequent seven-match ODI series. And with England’s key player, Kevin Pietersen, also absent, these two Twenty20 internationals are an opportunity for someone else in both teams to stake their name.

“The raw emotion of the past few days has dissipated,” Cox told the Australian after arriving home to Adelaide. “People for some reason think that we really don’t care about the fact that we lost – that it’s all okay for us and we just move onto the next one. If the team loses then we are scrutinised and deservedly so.

“The only way we can get selections right is if the team wins. We all understand that. We’re not shying away from the fact that we made an error at the end. Of course we should have played a spinner. Ultimately it’s my call. That’s why you don’t feel all that good about it when it turns out badly.”

Cox said he realised half an hour into the Test that he had misjudged the surface, which turned out to be slow and brought eight wickets for England’s offspinner Graeme Swann. Instead of choosing Hauritz, Australia selected Stuart Clark as a fourth fast man but he had almost no impact, although Australia’s lacklustre first-innings batting was the real turning point. It led to a hefty deficit from which Australia could not recover, and their 197-run defeat meant a 2-1 series win for England.

The Oval was not the only venue at which Cox had a major decision to make. He said the axing of the promising but out-of-form Phillip Hughes at Edgbaston was a particularly hard call.

“The decision to leave out Phil Hughes was the toughest thing I’ve had to do as a selector,” Cox said. “But [Shane] Watson gave us real presence at the top of the order. Yeah, we made a mistake at the end and no one’s walking away from that. Our Ashes, up until that one very well-defined moment, went very well for us.”

The Irish, as ever, will do their best to exploit any such issue to their advantage. They may be playing only for pride but for an Associate nation in a big tournament that is often the main motivation. Few have been unimpressed by them and only inexperience cost them the chance of an upset over Sri Lanka. They will also need no reminding of the events of the 2007 50-over World Cup. Theoretically, if they can beat Pakistan in a 50-over game, then in a Twenty20 game, the chances increase.

Nothing that England have done in this tournament to date gives much reason to believe they have a prayer of progressing any further. A laughable defeat against the Dutch was followed by a competent dismissal of a distracted Pakistan, but their humbling against South Africa on Thursday was a truer reflection of their standing. Quite simply, they were outclassed, rolled over for 111 – the lowest total of the competition so far – and routed by Jacques Kallis on cruise control.

India, by contrast, were progressing pretty serenely (give or take the odd testy press conference) until their surprise derailment at the hands of Dwayne Bravo. They qualified comfortably from a weak group made up of Bangladesh and Ireland, and it’s possible they were caught unawares by the sudden step-up in class that West Indies presented.

Whatever the reasons, forewarned means forearmed. The last time these two sides met in the World Twenty20, in Durban in September 2007, Yuvraj Singh strode into history with his brutalising of a young Stuart Broad, and India marched into the final stages as England skulked home early from yet another global tournament. Little we’ve witnessed thus far in 2009 suggests the story will be any different. But then again, shocks are part and parcel of this format, and any side containing an in-form Kevin Pietersen cannot be dismissed out of hand.
