Sri Lanka’s first-up success against Australia was followed by wins over West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland, showing their all-round capabilities in a range of situations. Their closest call came against Ireland on Sunday, when Mahela Jayawardene’s 78 dragged them to 144 and their bowlers held on for a nine-run triumph. It still didn’t guarantee them a spot in the final four.

While Kumar Sangakkara’s men are blot free in England, New Zealand were bewildered after being dismissed for 99 by Pakistan, chiefly because of the head-scratching reverse-swing provided by Umar Gul. Lasith Malinga can manage similar shape at times, but Daniel Vettori’s line-up will have the most concern over Sri Lanka’s spinners. If they conquer the slow men, a place in the semis should be theirs.

Few have been unimpressed by them and only inexperience cost them the chance of an upset over Sri Lanka. They will also need no reminding of the events of the 2007 50-over World Cup. Theoretically, if they can beat Pakistan in a 50-over game, then in a Twenty20 game, the chances increase.

Nothing that England have done in this tournament to date gives much reason to believe they have a prayer of progressing any further. A laughable defeat against the Dutch was followed by a competent dismissal of a distracted Pakistan, but their humbling against South Africa on Thursday was a truer reflection of their standing. Quite simply, they were outclassed, rolled over for 111 – the lowest total of the competition so far – and routed by Jacques Kallis on cruise control.

India, by contrast, were progressing pretty serenely (give or take the odd testy press conference) until their surprise derailment at the hands of Dwayne Bravo. They qualified comfortably from a weak group made up of Bangladesh and Ireland, and it’s possible they were caught unawares by the sudden step-up in class that West Indies presented.

Whatever the reasons, forewarned means forearmed. The last time these two sides met in the World Twenty20, in Durban in September 2007, Yuvraj Singh strode into history with his brutalising of a young Stuart Broad, and India marched into the final stages as England skulked home early from yet another global tournament. Little we’ve witnessed thus far in 2009 suggests the story will be any different. But then again, shocks are part and parcel of this format, and any side containing an in-form Kevin Pietersen cannot be dismissed out of hand.

The one major concern, however, is their middle order which sustained a horrid collapse of 5 for 40 in the last six overs. It didn’t cost them against Pakistan, thanks to Lasith Malinga’s deadly death-bowling, but it is one area that needs improvement if they are to beat firstly Ireland, then New Zealand.

Ireland, on the other hand, might have already peaked. They had long targeted the game against Bangladesh as their most likely chance for an upset; so comprehensive was their victory that it’s almost unfair to describe it as such. Yet they were given a rude awakening a couple of days later when New Zealand, injuries and all, knocked them flat by 83 runs. The allround ability of Kevin O’Brien has impressed and surprised many, while Trent Johnston and Kevin’s brother, Niall, remain class acts who could yet make it difficult for Sri Lanka. But the lack of experience playing against such a seasoned and powerful team, gradually moving into top gear, ought to be a test too far for Ireland.

Equally, Sri Lanka must do a New Zealand on Ireland and give them a thumping, not just a timid slap of the wrists.

Dwayne Bravo was scintillating against India, Fidel Edwards showed plenty of fire with his short-pitched bowling with the new ball, and Lendl Simmons’ cool head ensured the experience and skill of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan was hardly needed. The challenge is to reproduce the same levels of intensity, for nothing less will do against a side which is on a hot streak, and is looking to become the first team to win six Twenty20 internationals on the trot.

South Africa, along with Sri Lanka, have been the form team of the tournament so far. Unlike the mercurial and unpredictable West Indies, the South Africans take pride in their consistency, and have shown that it takes plenty for them to be beaten, even in a 20-over game. The bowlers have been outstanding, rescuing what seemed a lost cause against New Zealand, and the batting has plenty of depth and class. Can West Indies upset the form book twice in two days?
