It is time for that match-up again. Debates on the viability of the ODI game can take a backseat for a day – when India faces Pakistan, the format is irrelevant. The reasonably long interval since their last game – in the Champions Trophy in September last year – has only increased the pre-match buzz. It is safe to say millions around the world will be tuning in.

Coming as it does at the midway point of the tournament, the game will decide the course of the Asia Cup. Pakistan impressed during their opening game against Sri Lanka, but could not finish it off. Another defeat could end their campaign early.

Their problem lies in the batting department – specifically the out-of-depth youngsters at the top. Shahzaib Hasan and Umar Amin were bullied by sharp seam bowling, and ended up consuming too many balls before getting out. Shahid Afridi will have to re-think the batting line-up, and possibly promote Kamran Akmal against the new ball. The Pakistan captain must be gutted that one of his best knocks failed to secure victory. Can he inspire himself to another classic? Can Shoaib Akhtar overcome his sub-par fitness and produce ten high-intensity overs?

India’s opening game panned out in a manner diametrically opposite to Pakistan’s – they were average, yet won easily thanks to Bangladesh’s largesse. India’s bowlers looked alarmingly flat, the fielding was lethargic and the top order struggled to deal with rustiness and the unusual floodlights. The new-ball bowlers handed the Bangladesh opening pair the initiative on a platter, and sides better than Bangladesh would have never let go of it.

Having been rescued by a freakish spell of offspin from Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni will want more from his frontline bowlers this time around. He will not read much into the failures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the chase – the young top order’s real test will be against Shoaib and co., who will try to bounce them out.

A win here will put India within touching distance of the final, while a defeat could leave them facing a tricky perform-or-perish game against the hosts. Given their recent travails in similar situations against Sri Lanka – in the World Twenty20 and in the Zimbabwe tri-series – they will be anxious to avoid a pressure game against their bugbears.

The Indian players are stars in their respective IPL teams but their results have been ordinary when playing together as an international side: in nine Twenty20 internationals since 2008, they have lost six and won three. The first victory was a remarkable come-from-behind effort inspired by the Pathan brothers in Sri Lanka, the other two were against Bangladesh and Ireland during a woeful World Twenty20 campaign in England this year.

The two significant problems India had in England, however, will be missing from these two games. Virender Sehwag, who had an injured shoulder during the World Twenty20, is back and in frightening form, and the other batsmen’s weaknesses against the rising delivery are unlikely to be exposed on the flat and true pitches in India.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, had a terrific World Twenty20 and were unbeaten until the final, which they lost to Pakistan. They were the tournament’s most vibrant team: the evergreen Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan’s daring improvisations gave them fast starts, while the combination of Murali, Mendis and Malinga was simply too much for most opponents to handle. Since then, however, Sri Lanka have lost three matches on the trot – one to Pakistan and two to New Zealand, that too at home.

Their Test bowlers were battered by the Indian batsmen and Sri Lanka will welcome the addition of Lasith Malinga’s pace and yorker-bowling skills to their attack. Jayasuriya will join Dilshan to form a destructive, match-winning opening combination. The question, though, is whether Ajantha Mendis will be able to exercise any control over a batting line-up that treated him with disdain over the last month.

“When you take all those things into consideration, the way we are continuing to improve our cricket is fantastic,” said Ricky Ponting after that game. The assertion is difficult to disprove. Two losses have turned the series around and put India under pressure. The home side’s win in Nagpur was a comprehensive rout – the batsman piled it on and the bowlers put the stranglehold on the Australian top order and kept up the pressure, the fielders backing them up. In Delhi Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh made easy work of the modest target of 230 on a tough track, often making the visitors appear complacent.

This is a similar situation to the one India found themselves in during the seven-match series in England in 2007. They were 3-1 but managed to claw back to 3-3, only to lose the decider.

Knowing Dhoni’s captaincy they won’t be thinking about Wednesday’s game in Mumbai, but India know they’re up against it here. India have not lost a bilateral series since the last time Australia toured in 2007. Since 2006, they’ve lost just two bilateral series out of 14. That is an outstanding record and improving that against the No. 1 side is a massive incentive.

India only once won a bilateral series against Australia, having gone winless since 1986. Tomorrow presents an opportunity to reverse that trend.

India’s latest setbacks occurred at the Feroz Shah Kotla, where Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag picked up injuries, making them doubtful starters for the Mohali game. Gambhir was struck on the neck by a full-blooded pull from Ponting while fielding at short leg and a yorker from Peter Siddle crashed into Sehwag’s foot. Only on the morning of the game will it be known whether either batsman will be fit to play.

Australia, meanwhile, had a third player from their original tour party flying home because of injury. James Hopes picked up a hamstring strain in the first one-dayer, remained with the squad longer than fellow casualties Brett Lee and Tim Paine, but hadn’t recovered quickly enough for him to be able to play the remaining ODIs. Clint McKay, the Victoria seamer, was the latest addition to the Australian squad after Moises Henriques and Graham Manou. Mitchell Johnson seems to be pulling through the series despite a sore ankle. Other national hopefuls might be watching tomorrow’s match thinking they might be next to receive a call from Andrew Hilditch.

The schedule isn’t kind to the injured either. The teams left the Kotla only at midnight after Saturday’s game. Their arrival in Chandigarh was delayed and by the time they reached, there were fewer than 24 hours to go before Dhoni and Ponting are scheduled to toss. Provided both of them remain injury-free of course.

The added incentive to tomorrow’s contest is that if India win, they will claim the No. 1 ranking in one-day internationals. If Australia prevail, they will stretch their current one-point lead to three.

One-day cricket, however, is a far bigger draw than the five-day version and only the commute, especially back to the city after the match ends at night, could prevent a packed house at the one of India’s best stadiums.

Australia too have a few questions to answer: Will they give Shaun Marsh, who has had a successful stint in the IPL, an opportunity to open in the first ODI, or will they stick with Tim Paine who did a good job with Shane Watson against England? They might go with Paine at the top and push Marsh down. The middle order will miss the injured injured Michael Clarke, but Clarke has struggled in limited-overs cricket recently: his strike-rate in the 50-over format since the start of 2008 stands at a modest 66.81. However, his skills against spin bowling will be missed.

India will start the first ODI with a bit more hope than they did in the Champions Trophy: Virender Sehwag is back, and immediately the batting line-up looks much more potent. However, Yuvraj Singh is likely to sit out the first ODI due to a finger injury. With Rahul Dravid out, MS Dhoni can easily settle into the Dravid avatar that he has been doing so successfully in recent times: he doesn’t hit out as violently as in his early days, and promotes himself when there is a good start so he can anchor the innings and allow the big hitters to express themselves. Expect the Australians to test out Suresh Raina with bouncers; among all the Indian batsmen in the fray, this series will be the biggest for Raina.

However, India will be a little uneasy about their bowling line-up. Munaf Patel should get a game, and it will be interesting to see whether Ishant Sharma, who has been struggling for quite a while now in limited-overs games, is included in the XI.
