For a tournament whose worthiness has been questioned, two back-to-back dead rubbers are a potentially damaging prospect. It is time for that match-up again. Debates on the viability of the ODI game can take a backseat for a day – when India faces Pakistan, the format is irrelevant. Shahid Afridi will have to re-think the batting line-up, and possibly promote Kamran Akmal against the new ball. The Pakistan captain must be gutted that one of his best knocks failed to secure victory. Can he inspire himself to another classic? Can Shoaib Akhtar overcome his sub-par fitness and produce ten high-intensity overs?

India’s opening game panned out in a manner diametrically opposite to Pakistan’s – they were average, yet won easily thanks to Bangladesh’s largesse. India’s bowlers looked alarmingly flat, the fielding was lethargic and the top order struggled to deal with rustiness and the unusual floodlights. The new-ball bowlers handed the Bangladesh opening pair the initiative on a platter, and sides better than Bangladesh would have never let go of it.

Having been rescued by a freakish spell of offspin from Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni will want more from his frontline bowlers this time around. He will not read much into the failures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the chase – the young top order’s real test will be against Shoaib and co., who will try to bounce them out.

A win here will put India within touching distance of the final, while a defeat could leave them facing a tricky perform-or-perish game against the hosts. Given their recent travails in similar situations against Sri Lanka – in the World Twenty20 and in the Zimbabwe tri-series – they will be anxious to avoid a pressure game against their bugbears.

Australia have a slight injury concern over Michael Clarke, who flew to Sydney earlier than his team-mates on Saturday. The Indian players are stars in their respective IPL teams but their results have been ordinary when playing together as an international side: in nine Twenty20 internationals since 2008, they have lost six and won three. The first victory was a remarkable come-from-behind effort inspired by the Pathan brothers in Sri Lanka, the other two were against Bangladesh and Ireland during a woeful World Twenty20 campaign in England this year.

The two significant problems India had in England, however, will be missing from these two games. Their Test bowlers were battered by the Indian batsmen and Sri Lanka will welcome the addition of Lasith Malinga’s pace and yorker-bowling skills to their attack. Jayasuriya will join Dilshan to form a destructive, match-winning opening combination. Two losses have turned the series around and put India under pressure. The home side’s win in Nagpur was a comprehensive rout – the batsman piled it on and the bowlers put the stranglehold on the Australian top order and kept up the pressure, the fielders backing them up. In Delhi Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh made easy work of the modest target of 230 on a tough track, often making the visitors appear complacent.

This is a similar situation to the one India found themselves in during the seven-match series in England in 2007. They were 3-1 but managed to claw back to 3-3, only to lose the decider.

Knowing Dhoni’s captaincy they won’t be thinking about Wednesday’s game in Mumbai, but India know they’re up against it here. India have not lost a bilateral series since the last time Australia toured in 2007. Since 2006, they’ve lost just two bilateral series out of 14. That is an outstanding record and improving that against the No. 1 side is a massive incentive.

India only once won a bilateral series against Australia, having gone winless since 1986. Tomorrow presents an opportunity to reverse that trend.
