Pakistan have a far superior record in Twenty20s this year – they won the World Twenty20 and overall have seven wins in nine games. New Zealand are no slouches themselves – they beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in what was their only highlight of a disappointing tour in September- but their success in Abu Dhabi couldn’t hide their struggle against spin. Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi, with their wily variations, nibbled away at New Zealand while proving economical. With the pair, and possibly Shoaib Malik, likely to gobble a major share of the 20 overs, the New Zealand batsmen, who gave up 12 wickets at 22.42, face a serious challenge.

Pakistan face their own demons with the bat; the terrible shot selection that brought their downfall in the ODI decider prompted Afridi to liken his batsmen to “club cricketers”, and the comparison will only be reinforced in the event of a repeat.

There are other reasons as well. New Zealand are here without a coach and Pakistan’s man, Intikhab Alam, is more a manager than a modern-day coach. So for the first time in many years, we will be watching cricket, essentially, coach-less. As cricket comes to the end of a decade in which coaches have assumed the significance of unelected advisors to government – they are important but no one can decide why – it is a timely, if no doubt temporary, step back to a forgotten time.

On the field will step two of cricket’s most powerful current captains. After recent fudges at home, Daniel Vettori and Younis Khan have the kind of control, say and influence captains around the world could only hope for. Vettori has selection duties, is his side’s key allrounder and matchwinner and is taking on more coaching duties after the exit of Andy Moles. Younis, having resigned, has come back as captain with greater security, a more amenable management setup and presumably a free hand over selection matters, as most Pakistan captains have had. Admittedly, his grip will always be more fragile than Vettori’s.

And there will still be much else to keep an eye on. Shane Bond continuing his return to international cricket, the forgotten Scott Styris trying to capitalise on others’ injury misfortunes, the perpetual hope of a hand or two from Brendon McCullum. Pakistan will eagerly monitor the ongoing development of Mohammad Aamer and Umar Akmal, as well as the return of some real openers at the top of the order.

Underdogs in the movies start out of their depth, find the happy knack of winning, and then start liking what they feel. Exhibit 2: New Zealand are outclassed by South Africa on a true Centurion pitch. Then Sri Lanka, fooled by the earlier two pitches at the Wanderers, put New Zealand in, and discover they have given their opponents first use of a batting beauty. Against England, New Zealand get a spitting beauty of a pitch, call right at the toss, and run through the batting.

Underdogs in the movies are hit by injuries, handicaps, and miseries, but every setback inspires them. Exhibit 3: New Zealand lose Jacob Oram before their campaign starts. Jesse Ryder pulls his left abductor muscle during the Sri Lanka game, but before leaving plays the kind of innings that must have led to the coining of the phrase “beware the wounded batsman”. Then Daryl Tuffey, at the time looking their best bowler, breaks his hand while fielding and is ruled out for the rest of the tournament. Next up, Grant Elliott, hero of the win against England, breaks his thumb, but braves the injury to score a heroic unbeaten 75 in the semi-final.

The real villains start appearing only in the later stages of underdog movies. Exhibit 4: On paper Pakistan have everything they need to end this underdog tale, but their occasional overconfidence and exceptional play from the underdogs take New Zealand to the final.

Underdogs in the movies meet the biggest, scariest villain right at the end. Exhibit 5: It is always Australia’s fate, or that of any champion team, that their excellence, consistency, their hard work, will always be seen as villainous in romantic underdog stories. We can also conveniently forget that they too lost three of their most important players – Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin – in the lead-up to the tournament. Champions, though, don’t deserve such considerations. Every good underdog story needs a mean villain, and Australia have rarely failed to oblige at world events.

If more context is needed, New Zealand have historically seen Australia as big brothers, and have always sought to bring their best against them. Moreover, New Zealand are yet to beat Australia in a tournament final, and have lost six times (tournaments with more than one final have been considered as one). Centurion will not provide them with a freak pitch either. It’s all stacked up against New Zealand this time, and no self-respecting underdog story would have it any other way.

How good this story is will be known by Monday evening, or rather early on Tuesday morning in Australia and New Zealand.

This is India’s third one-day series in Sri Lanka over the last 13 months. Where for decades India’s record here had been nothing to crow over – they arrived for a tri-series in 2005 having won just nine of 33 matches – a strong one-day outfit has turned that record around dramatically.They have won seven of ten matches since then and in their last two series proved the past now counts for little, beating Sri Lanka 3-2 last August and 4-1 in February. In terms of rankings, there’s plenty at stake for India in this series – if they go unbeaten into the final and win there, they will climb to No. 1 in the ICC’s ODI rankings for the first time.

India strutted their stuff at the two practice sessions they had since arriving two days after the tournament began, and look confident. There were no traces of rust in how their batsmen and bowlers applied themselves. On the whole, the manner of their preparation has been calm and self-assured even though Virender Sehwag, a critical cog in the batting line-up, is missing. Plenty of responsibility will be on Rahul Dravid, recalled to the one-day team after two years. India’s middle order has been shaky against fast, short-pitched bowling and if a wicket goes down early, expect Dravid to walk out first.

To beat a confident Indian outfit, New Zealand will have to shape up in disciplines that let them down in the first game. Their batting was rocked by a superb display from three bowlers of varying speeds and trajectories – Ian Bishop called it one of the best one-day efforts under lights he had seen – but the application was perhaps to blame. The top order seemed intent on attacking from the start. In the field, New Zealand failed to finish the job when Sri Lanka were 69 for 5 in 25.3 overs, and also gave them leeway with singles and doubles in the field. That was surprising given how efficient they were in the Twenty20s. A defeat tomorrow will see them crash out of the short tournament.

Sri Lanka, almost always formidable opponents on their own soil, do not start as favourites. New Zealand took plenty of confidence from two night wins at the Premadasa last week and they know their biggest shot at winning is getting into Sri Lanka’s top order. New Zealand have repeatedly highlighted the importance of dismissing Tillakaratne Dilshan early to put pressure on Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, leaving a shaky lower order sweating.

Successive middle-order muddles during the Twenty20s left Kumar Sangakkara ruing the lack of application and calling on the players to introspect going into this series. Sri Lanka will hope that Sanath Jayasuriya finds form at a venue in which he has scored 2373 runs at 38.27, but contributions from the likes of Angelo Mathews and Chamara Kapugedera will be equally important. Another worry for the home side is that Muttiah Muralitharan is in some doubt after not recovering entirely from a groin strain sustained on day five of the SSC Test, and both teams will keenly await news on his fitness tomorrow.

New Zealand did little wrong in the Twenty20s. Their response to Dilshan’s onslaught in game one was calm and their batting and bowling more than efficient during the series clincher. Their effective handling of Ajantha Mendis – who caused nightmares at Trent Bridge this summer – was another reason behind their victory over Sri Lanka.

Nishantha Ranatunga, secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), confirmed that the schedule was tweaked “long ago” following a BCCI request. “Both Sri Lanka and New Zealand had no objection,” Ranatunga said.

India will now play New Zealand on September 11, followed by a match against Sri Lanka the next day.

The BCCI refused to discuss the schedule but it does give Indian players an extra day’s gap after the Indian board’s new one-day corporate tournament ends on September 8. Almost all the players in the Indian squad for the Sri Lanka series will appear for their respective private employers in the Indian board event.

As they sat for the team meeting in the morning, it was the first time that all the players had come together in close to seven weeks – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Suresh Raina had been away for longer. The first day of the camp involved the meeting and a fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy gym. Gary Kirsten, the India coach, had given the team impromptu fitness tests two weeks ago, and he liked what he saw today.

“Based on what we saw two weeks ago, there have been significant improvements from every player, which means they are taking it seriously,” Kirsten said. “That’s all we wanted. The players have realised that this is a part of the game that they all want to improve on, and the players have taken on that responsibility.”

The big question, though, is whether four days are enough for a team to get into the international mode and up their intensity for a packed season ahead. With the BCCI’s Corporate Cup lined up, Kirsten had no choice, because he didn’t want to eat into the break that the players had finally got, which he thought was essential.

“It was very important for us and the guys to have at least a six-week break,” Kirsten said. “It’s the longest break they have had for a long time. It was important that they were mentally fresh for that process.

“With a lot of cricket coming up, the Corporate Cup – and quite a few players playing in that – and then three games in Sri Lanka, then we have a longish period before we play our first game in Champions Trophy before the 26th. We feel, with that included, we have got quite a lot of preparation time.” Kirsten also said the time they would get in South Africa would be crucial for the preparations as well.

The ’short’ word was not far away, but Kirsten said he wasn’t unduly worried about the troubles the young batsmen have had handling the short-pitched stuff recently. “I only saw the short-pitch ball being a problem in just one game in the T20 World Cup, so I don’t see that as a problem. We are playing the 50-over version now, which is very different from T20. But within, in terms of our gameplans, our training, our structures, we try and cover every base that we need to cover to make sure we give ourselves best chance of success. That might be one of it, but there might be a whole lot others.”

Over the next three days, they will get to working on the various skill sets – both in nets session and open-wicket practice at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The players can expect the coming days to be as intense as the camp they had around this time last year in Bangalore, or the five days they spent in New Zealand before their first match. Kirsten has a reputation for being an unobtrusive but tough taskmaster, and more of it seemed in store.

“We have put a big focus on our conditioning, because it is a nice break they have had,” he said. “It’s given them time to work on that side of their game. Equally, it’s time for us to start upping the intensity on our practising. We are going to be hitting a lot of balls over the next three-four days, the guys are going to be bowling a lot to get back on track.”
