Over the past year, debate about the top teams in Test cricket has usually centred on three teams: Australia, South Africa and India. Sri Lanka are almost never mentioned but they now find themselves at No .2, thanks to a superb record over the past three-odd years during which they have lost only one series. To remain second, though, they need to defeat New Zealand (who haven’t won any series against strong opposition in the same period) in Colombo.

After a shaky start in the first Test, Sri Lanka were handed the advantage by newly promoted opener Tillkaratne Dilshan’s counter-attacking 92. A solid performance from the middle-order strengthened their grip, and New Zealand were left to play catch-up for the rest of the game. Sri Lanka’s bowling unit, while not at its best, was disciplined and didn’t dish up too many freebies.

In contrast New Zealand’s bowlers leaked runs, with fast bowler Iain O’Brien and spinner Jeetan Patel having a particularly hard time. Captain Daniel Vettori has stressed the need for cutting off the runs and forcing the batsmen into risks. He will have the luxury of fielding a full-strength side after all his team-mates recovered from the stomach bug which laid them low midway through the first Test.

At a ground which is something of a fortress for Sri Lanka, the visitors need big performances from their two most talented batsmen, Jesse Ryder and Ross Taylor, if they are to make a fight of it. Else, the pressure will start to mount on coach, Andy Moles (who along with Vettori is now in the selection panel), under whom New Zealand have yet to win a Test.

The Ashes is a Test cricket series, played between England and Australia. It is one of international cricket’s most celebrated rivalries and dates back to 1882. It is currently played biennially, alternately in England and Australia. However, since cricket is a summer game, the venues being in opposite hemispheres means the break between series alternates between 18 and 30 months. A series of “The Ashes” now comprises five Test matches, two innings per match, under the regular rules for international Test-match cricket. If a series is drawn then the country already holding the Ashes retains them.

These two teams have been apart for barely a month but lock horns again as England’s international season makes its earliest ever start. Some players, most notably Chris Gayle, have only just made it back from the IPL as Test cricket struggles to show it still remains a top priority. This short series certainly feels unloved at the moment, as everyone waits for the main action of the summer to begin.

Yet, for England it is a vitally important contest as they search for that elusive momentum to carry forward. They start favourites but it shouldn’t be forgotten that they handed back the Wisden Trophy with their 1-0 defeat in the Caribbean. A fresh-looking team will take the field with a new No. 3 and the possibility of two debutant seamers for the first time since 1993 as Andy Flower makes his presence felt. But after the upheavals of the last 12 months England are still playing catch-up as they try to work out their best combination.

West Indies, though, have struggled in the early stages of the tour and head into the Test on the back of a 10-wicket warm-up defeat against England Lions. The batting has been especially unconvincing and it still isn’t clear who Gayle will open with. At least in Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards they have two quicks who can seriously trouble England, although they will have to shed some of their sweaters to bowl at full speed.

Australia are one win away from wrapping up the series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, but not much talk has centred around the team’s on-field performance. Since the offspinner Saeed Ajmal was reported for a suspect action the sides have been under more intense focus than during the opening three matches.

Ajmal was fined by the Pakistan Cricket Board for comments directed to Shane Watson and Younis Khan asked why Australia are involved in so many controversies when they face India and Pakistan. Michael Clarke maintained the series had been played in a good spirit.

The talking points will shift to the middle during Friday’s fourth ODI in Abu Dhabi. Australia lead 2-1 in the five-match contest – Pakistan lost 10 for 76 in Monday’s defeat – as they finalise their preparations for the start of their engagements in England in June.

One down with two to play, New Zealand have it all to do. So comprehensively were they outplayed in all aspects in Hamilton that a reversal of fortunes is a tall task: their top order was woefully inadequate, the fast bowlers were a distant second to Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel, and Harbhajan Singh comfortably outperformed Daniel Vettori in the spin department.

The gulf was wide in the first Test, but New Zealand have been putting in the hard yards over the last four days to give themselves the best chance of bridging the gap. What they’ll hope for now is to get some early momentum at McLean Park, take the honours in the first two sessions, and hope India feel the pressure. Some quick Indian wickets with the new ball could still swing things their way, but if India survive the early exchanges, it could be another long Test for New Zealand.

The series is decided and the Cape Town Test has become a dead rubber but for several individuals there is still plenty to play for. As far as team momentum is concerned, this game has far less importance than the equivalent dead rubber in Sydney in January. Australia fought back from their 2-0 series deficit to win that game and the impetus helped them begin strongly in South Africa, while their opponents faded away. But this time the South Africans have no Test cricket on the agenda for nine months – their home series against England begins in December.

India’s quest for a first Test series win in New Zealand in 41 years began with Mahendra Singh Dhoni winning the toss and deciding to bowl at Seddon Park. The onus was on Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma to vindicate Dhoni’s decision to buck conventional wisdom and bowl first.
