Munaf Patel edged out L Balaji for the third seamer’s spot, while Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman returned to the fray after playing no part in the one-day series. New Zealand left out Brent Arnel and Jeetan Patel, and there was a debut for Martin Guptill.
India won the one-day game here at a canter, with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir going berserk, but this was a different proposition. They hadn’t even won a Test in New Zealand since 1975-76 and Amit Mishra, the second spinner, was left out in favour of the additional seamer in conditions that were certain to be far more pace-friendly. The onus was on Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma to vindicate Dhoni’s decision to buck conventional wisdom and bowl first.
