The key will be their battle against Bangladesh’s army of spinners, who have been vital in ensuring the home team’s superiority over Zimbabwe in the past few years. In 18 balls Yuvraj Singh undid 10 overs’ hard work by Bangladesh to pull India back from another solid start by Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma. In five balls Pragyan Ojha undid their eight overs of keeping pace with a stiff total as India became the first side in this tournament to successfully defend.

The crisp sound from Yuvraj’s bat resonated at Trent Bridge regularly, with sixes flying here and there as India managed 59 runs in their last four overs. Ojha came on and removed Junaid Siddique and Shakib Al Hasan in his first over, after which a promising chase stumbled.

If the defining moments of this Group A match were easy to identify, it was hard to not recognise the hard work Bangladesh had put in to stay in the match and force India to come up with something special. The match started with Gambhir and Rohit continuing to ensure that India didn’t miss the injured Virender Sehwag.

Rohit batted like a seasoned Twenty20 opener. After Gambhir had got off to a quick start with a square-cut boundary off the second ball of the match, Rohit took charge. The first ball he faced today, he leant into a good-length and creamed Mashrafe Mortaza through extra cover. Bangladesh were apprehensive about using their spinners in the Powerplays, and Rohit capitalised on the medium-pace coming on to his bat. He drove well off either foot, clipped off his pads, and played only one slog shot.

Although Gambhir slowed down, India reached 54 in the first six overs, with Rohit scoring 32 off 18. Mohammad Ashraful immediately introduced spin, and Rohit got out trying to dominate them.

MS Dhoni came out first drop, but at the same time Shakib slowed things down, giving the batsmen no pace to work with. Shakib was exceptional with his control, making sure India stayed in that consolidation mode for a considerable period.

Shakib’s three-over spell went for 17, claimed Rohit, and India managed only 44 between the seventh and 13th over. India managed only one six and one four during that spell. Mortaza came back to bowl one more tight over, and the pressure resulted in Dhoni’s wicket in the next over. With Shakib finishing off strongly, India had got only 62 runs in the middle 10 overs. Gambhir managed a laboured 50 off 46 balls.

But Yuvraj pulled out an assault that broke several Bangladeshi hearts. Just like lightning he struck after seven quiet deliveries. He took an impressive Naeem Islam for back-to-back sixes, and one more for the road two balls later. He welcomed Rubel Hossain back with a six and consecutive boundaries. After Yuvraj finally got out for 41 off 18, Bangladesh clawed their way back, keeping Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan quiet.

Rubel had bowled a superb first half of the 20th over, giving away only two and cleaning up Raina. But in walked Irfan Pathan and smote a six and a four to post a challenging total.

That final assault wasn’t enough to deflate Bangladesh’s confidence. Tamim Iqbal and Siddique came out swinging, tasting some success against the left-arm opening bowlers, Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan. Both the bowlers bowled length, and that’s where most Bangladeshi batsmen love it. Especially spectacular was Siddique’s approach, who pulled the first ball he played for six.

In the first two overs Bangladesh got 20, and although Tamim fell to Yusuf in the third, Siddique didn’t slow down. He hit Zaheer for back-to-back boundaries, and then Yusuf for a six before Ashraful got out in an unfortunate manner in the sixth over. He played a crunchy cover-drive off Ishant Sharma, backing away, but found Gambhir at cover.

Out came Bangladesh’s best player, Shakib, but it was Siddique who kept the pace up even as Shakib looked to rebuild. He set the agenda by stepping out and hitting Harbhajan Singh for a six in his first over. Once again, just when it seemed Bangladesh had done well to stay with India, the defending champions produced another game-breaker: Ojha, making his Twenty20 international debut.

Shakib looked to pull the first ball he bowled, but it skidded on, and took the top edge. Siddique chose an inopportune time to hit Ojha out of the ground, and holed out to wide long-on four balls later.

India could sense from there on that the chase had died, and so it turned with the inexperienced lower-middle order. Ojha took two more wickets, Yuvraj took two diving catches, and Bangladesh managed only 81 runs since Ojha’s first ball as India closed the game out professionally.

They may be favourites for one of the two Super Eights slots from Group A but it’s against India, not Ireland, that they will want to put up a special show. They need not struggle for motivation: in the past they have tended to raise their game against India. Look no further than the World Cup in 2007, when they were responsible for knocking India out.

The shrewd planning and format of the tournament, though, means this game is most likely to count for nothing – unless Ireland spring up a surprise. For if, as expected, India and Bangladesh go through to the second round, they neither carry any points nor get an easier group in the Super Eights by the virtue of having won both matches.

Australia, spurred to a daunting total by a thumping opening partnership, clinched a facile victory over Bangladesh in Nottingham. From the start it was apparent that Australia were going to dominate, what with Bangladesh’s medium-pacers leaking runs and Tamim Iqbal reprieving Brad Haddin in the first over. Haddin and Shane Watson – who slammed a 21-ball half-century – made Bangladesh pay and though Mahmuddulah’s four wickets ensured Australia didn’t post a mammoth total, the favourites clearly had enough runs. Bangladesh’s top order chased hard, but following Shakib Al Hasan’s dismissal for a sprightly 54 in the 14th over the wheels fell off.

Australia’s openers effectively nailed the match in eight overs. When the ball was new, the field in and the wicketkeeper up, both Haddin and Watson boldly chose to go over the top, twice lofting Syed Rasel over the onside for sixes in an over. Then, when the field spread out, the pair chipped and nudged it cleverly into the gaps to keep the board ticking over constantly, but also managed to find the fence whenever the bowlers dropped it short and wide.

The fourth over went for 16, with Haddin and Watson each slamming sixes, and the fifth cost 22. By this time Watson and Haddin both were using their feet and wrists excellently. Watson dumped offspinner Naeem Islam for four and six in consecutive deliveries as Australia reached 86 in seven overs. Watson raised his half-century in just 21 balls with another swipe over midwicket, the most profitable shot on this track.

Mahmudullah struck in a double-wicket over during which both openers picked out fielders in the deep. Enter Andrew Symonds and three sixes over midwicket, but after racing to 27 from 14 balls, he fell to Mahmudullah in the 13th over. Three deliveries later Mahmudullah ended Ricky Ponting’s scratchy innings and Australia had a new pair at the crease again. Where his team-mates all suffered, Mahmudullah returned figures of 4 for 37 and his role was instrumental in roping Australia in from what seemed a massive total.

There was the usual flurry of heaves, hoicks and wickets during the final overs as Bangladesh snapped a 52-run stand between Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke and finished with a tidy last three overs.

Bangladesh began their chase frenetically, taking 31 from the first two overs. In the first over Tamim larruped Nathan Bracken for 18, using his feet to launch a beautiful straight six. In the second over Junaid Siddique took Brett Lee for three boundaries, the most audacious being a swat over extra cover with Siddique a third down the track.

Mitchell Johnson sent Siddique’s leg stump cartwheeling with a quick and straight delivery and Lee had his man when Tamim drove straight to mid-off in the fourth over. Then came an engrossing period where both sides battled for leverage. Mohammad Ashraful broke the shackles of a nervous start with three successive fours off Johnson, using his crease excellently to clear the infield on both sides. Bracken swung it back with three singles in the sixth over, but Shakib and Ashraful took boundaries off David Hussey; Tamim’s sweep was forceful while Ashraful’s reverse-paddle was gentle.

In the next over Tamim paddled and drove James Hopes for boundaries and Ashraful sliced to third man. Following Ashraful’s dismissal for 26 to the first ball of Johnson’s next spell, Shakib clubbed Symonds’ first two deliveries for six, survived a stumping, and promptly creamed four through extra cover. His half-century needed just 25 deliveries.

Shakib was the fourth to go and at the time Bangladesh were still in the hunt, but his dismissal was a hammer blow and the innings never recovered as Lee and Bracken strangled the life out of the lower order.
